What can be more ethical than the farmers having a direct ownership of the distribution channels of their own products. This is what we call Direct Trade, the farmers owning their own brand and marketing and delivering directly to the customer. Buying Nardo organic coffee is like buying produce at the weekend
farmer's market where farmers sell directly to the consumer. In the coffee business, this process eliminates up to 4 layers of middlemen used in the traditional trading model.
In order to make the biodynamic community financially sustainable in the long term, it is critical that direct distribution channels are established so that a higher percentage of the sale of coffee in the consuming countries goes back to the farming community. This allows for the expansion of organic/biodynamic practices in the area, not only for coffee farming but also for local food production.
Direct Trade, just like Farmers Markets, is an important development in the future viability of sustainable farming project across developing nations. Fairness in trade issues are addressed by several competing certification models, however we feel that the fairest form of trade is Direct Trade as it allows producers to move up the value chain.
This project is made possible by our relationships and support of companies like Riverford Organic and the coffee shops that serve our coffee across the UK.
